Since 1965, the Windansea Menehune Surf Competition has stood as a cherished tradition in Southern California surf culture. Created to encourage and support the next generation of surfers, the contest has long been a launchpad for young talent destined to carry on the sport’s treasured legacy.

Before the Menehune Contest began, surf competitions in the region were few and far between — and none catered specifically to junior surfers. That changed with Windansea’s vision. Today, young surfers travel from across the country to compete in this iconic event, which has become a rite of passage for aspiring wave riders.

Many of the world’s top professional surfers got their start here, learning the values of sportsmanship, discipline, and healthy competition. As the level of talent continues to rise, the Menehune Contest remains a vital force in shaping the future of surfing.
This year’s event was no exception. Local Break was on the scene, and the 2025 crop of competitors did not disappoint. A powerful early fall swell brought pumping waves to the coast — both a blessing and a challenge. For first-time contestants, the conditions made getting into the lineup more difficult than expected. But for seasoned groms, it was a dream come true: a chance to showcase their skills in front of the judges and the community.

And then, as if the ocean wanted to join the celebration, a pod of dolphins made a surprise appearance mid-competition. They glided through the surf alongside the kids, leaping into the air and performing playful tricks that left the crowd in awe. It was a moment of pure magic — a reminder of the deep connection between surfers and the sea.

Congratulations to all the winners, and a special shoutout to Kaiea Cambell for her standout performance and for taking home the coveted Lane Davey surfboard.
If you missed this year’s contest, why not make plans to get involved in 2026? Whether you're a surfer, a fan, or a local business, there’s a way to support the Windansea Surf Club and help keep this tradition alive.
