For young surfers, getting into competitive surfing is about more than catching waves and chasing scores. It’s about trying something new, meeting other surfers, building confidence and experiencing the excitement of putting their surfing to the test. That’s what makes the Menehune Surf Contest such a meaningful part of the San Diego surf community.

Organized by the WindanSea Surf Club, the Menehune has long provided a place for younger surfers to experience competition in an environment that feels just as much about community as it does about performance. For some, it may be their first taste of competitive surfing. For others, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with friends, meet new faces and continue developing their skills in the water.

What makes the contest special is the atmosphere surrounding it. Competition can be intimidating, especially for kids who are just starting out. The Menehune offers an opportunity to learn how it all works, from paddling out for a heat to managing nerves and making the most of a limited amount of time in the lineup. Win or lose, every heat is a chance to learn something.

Just as important is the social side of the event. Surfing can sometimes feel like an individual pursuit, but contests like the Menehune bring local surfers together. Kids who might otherwise only recognize one another from their home breaks get the chance to spend time together, share waves and build friendships with others who have the same passion for surfing. Those connections are part of what makes a local surf community thrive.

The contest also carries a tradition that stretches back to 1965, when the WindanSea Surf Club first created the event for surfers 12 and under at La Jolla Shores. While surfing and competition have changed considerably since then, the idea behind the Menehune remains relevant: give young surfers a chance to participate, grow and find their place in the lineup.

Local Break covered the Menehune Surf Contest in both 2025 and 2026, capturing a piece of that experience and the young surfers helping carry San Diego’s surf culture forward.

For the next generation of surfers, the Menehune is an opportunity to learn, grow and have a little fun along the way.
